Today was my fist day interning at Studio &! Today I was introduced to the life as an artist at Studio &. I was given tasks to complete such as writing, “outrageous art inside” on our sign outside to attract visitors. I also helped reorganize the studio with different art that I thought looked ascetically pleasing to the eye. I also made sure that all of the art hung around the studio had professional tags to that each piece could be sold. If a piece of art did not have a professional tag I emailed the artists and informed them that they needed professional tags on certain art pieces. For lunch I went out to a local Indian restaurant with Elizabeth Kinahan and Tim Kapustka. At lunch I learned all about how Studio & started and how they were involved in the community. Tim Kapustka is a graphic designer so I got the inside scoop of how to create prints on shirts and cards! For my first day I was exposed to many different mediums and techniques used in art. I spent some time working on my online museum and began brainstorming for my exhibit based off of local artists. Today I met Crystal Hartman who is an illustrator, a jeweler, and a painter. We had a long discussion about how she created her jewelry that is on display and is sold at Studio &. I was intrigued to hear all about the work and time that goes into each piece. Crystal explained to me that her family owns two turquoise mines and which gives her a great advantage when it comes to finding her stones from a trustworthy place. Crytal is very down to earth and cares a lot about where she gets her materials to make her jewelry. She hopes to get these materials in the most ecofriendly way. Lastly, Tim gave me my very own Studio & tee shirt!

Today I learned about what Elizabeth does to participate as one of the five members and artists involved in studio &. Elizabeth is a painter and she controls the finances behind the business. Today I filled in all of the holes around the studio by using thick plaster paint and a knife! There were so many holes due to previous art that was hung around the studio so this process took me a long time. Then I helped Elizabeth by mailing art back to artists at the post office and deposited money at the bank. The rest of the day involved me getting one on one time painting with Elizabeth! I brought in a portrait that I was working on for my art portfolio and got really helpful feedback from her. Thanks to Elizabeth’s feedback and ideas I made a lot of progress on my art piece!

Today I met Shay Lopez. He is one of the five members involved in Studio &. He is a painter and works with wire as well. We discussed his techniques for different types of art he does. He gave me inspiration to try anything that comes to mind even if it involves smashing glass and then painting it. Shay recommended I explore and play around with many different materials in order to find out what I enjoy and like doing the most. With this inspiration I worked more on a self-portrait I am painting for my art portfolio. In addition I found contact information to many local artists that I would like to use in my exhibit based off of local artists in Durango. I used quality time looking up different artists and looking at their art. All of this time was spend for my overall project, which will be an exhibit on my online museum. Today was pretty slow in the studio so I helped out Shay by hanging up posters all around town to advertise for Studio &’s four year anniversary party.

Today I worked with Minna Jain. She is a visual artist and member at Studio &. I learned so much from Minna because I chose to interview her. Not only did she answer so many questions I had in mind in my mentor interview, but she also explained in detail the type of art she is interested in. In display in the gallery were many types of photographs that Minna took using many different types of vintage cameras. Minna explained in detail what led her to each photo. Her photos were so unique and looked like there was a filter from Instagram on it. I learned from Minna that Instagram filters actually mimic photos from using old vintage cameras. I showed Minna my online museum and my exhibit that I was working on and she gave me great feedback in order to improve my site. Not only that, but she exposed me to great sites that are very inspirational. Check out my interview with Minna on my Mentor Interview page!
Today I helped get ready for Studio &’s four year anniversary party by creating hundreds of buttons to give out. Studio & is putting on a listening room tonight so I helped clean, reorganize, put up chairs, and move furniture around so that there would be enough room for the band to play comfortably.

Today I helped clean up from the four-year anniversary party Studio & had. The party was based off of a tennis theme so I helped cut down and put away all of the hanging tennis rackets from the ceiling. Then I helped out Scott and Tim by creating more buttons with the Studio & logo on it. I also put up some art in the window at Studio &. Libby Cowls came to see me working today! Libby, Tim and I had a conversation being your own boss and how challenging that can be! Here at the Studio Tim is his own boss and he was explaining how tough it can be. Tim informed me that having a career based off of art could prevent you from just creating art all day. I have come to realize that being an artist can be difficult. In fact living in the grownup world can be hard because unlike school you don’t get any breaks! Most of the Artists here at studio & juggle more than one job. Studio & is happy because spring break is coming up. With such a dry season of no visitors, people are starting to stop by on their break from out of town and are intrigued by the art inside. Once Libby left I spent a lot of time working on my online museum.
Tim introduced me to really neat books today. There are a series of books called Studio Visit. Each book shows many different American artists type of art and style. It is very inspirational to see the variety of art created all over the country. I may use some of these artists in future exhibits on my online museum.

Today I helped out Elizabeth by mailing boxes for her at the post office. In addition I helped repaint a wall that was painted green for Studio &’s four year anniversary party. This paint job took a lot of paint and time! I did not finish because we ran out of paint so I will finish this job another day. Today I was told to look in Studio &’s bathroom. What I took away from this bathroom is a collage of Studio &’s history and interests. This is the most chaotic bathroom I have ever been in. The artists in the studio put up things that humor them as well as posters that they have created for past events here at the studio. I spent the rest of my day painting and working on my exhibit for my online museum. I have put together the pieces of art that I hope to include in my “Local Fare Durango” exhibit. The next step will be composing emails to all of the artists in order to ask for their permission to post their art.

Today Shay exposed me to painting with a palette knife! I was given a red, yellow, blue, brown, and white acrylic paint. He lead me threw a couple of instructions to begin the painting. Then I experimented and continued to add things until I was satisfied with what I had created. This took me around two hours to work through the struggle of not knowing what I was doing or creating. Even though I had no plan or final result in mind, I found it really satisfying and fun to go with what I felt was right! Shay introduced me to many different types of techniques of how to use a palette knife to get different textures and shapes. After I was content with what I had created I took a break and let it dry for a while and began working more on my exhibit for my online museum. I continued to find art that I wanted to use in my local exhibit. Throughout the rest of the day I took breaks painting a portrait of my brother and added more the piece I created in the morning. Shay gave me a lot of ideas to improve my piece and I am going to continue to add to this piece tomorrow.

Today is my final day here at the Studio. I am going to work on my museum exhibit so that I am in a good place to finalize it for the exhibition. In addition to my project I made myself buttons with the online museum Spotted Canvas logo on it for my. I will give out these buttons at my exhibition while exhibiting my project. Not only will these buttons add to the project, but also they will help promote my online museum. Once I have finalized my exhibit I am going to continue promoting the Museum on Facebook and Twitter. We finally got new white paint so I finished painting the wall white and painted around the studio where it was dirty. This took up the rest of my day here at the Studio.
